7 Ways To Get Paid To Drive Your Car

Published August 27, 2011 By Anna This post may contain affiliate links. Regardless, I only recommend sites I've researched and/or used and trust.

Yes, it's true. There are lots of ways to get paid to drive your car. Some pay you for driving other people around (you're probably already familiar with some companies that do this), while others will pay you to use your car making deliveries.

While you may not be able tor replace your day job with these sorts of “gigs,” they can provide much-needed extra income. And this income is more than what you might receive for doing things like surveys and online work — some of these companies claim you can earn as much as $20 an hour!

7 Ways To Get Paid To Drive Your Car

So, let's get to it. Below, I've listed out several companies that pay you for driving for different reasons.

Get Paid To Make Deliveries

When I say you can get paid to make deliveries, I don't exactly mean just working for Domino's or anything like that. Although for a few of these companies, delivering pizzas could be realistic.

You can get paid to deliver all kinds of things — fast food from any restaurant, groceries, and pretty much any purchases people want made that they don't want to pick up themselves. This is one of the most ideal ways for college students to earn money.

Below are several companies that have started paying people to sign up and make deliveries.

Shipt

If you deliver with Shipt, you can earn up to $22 hourly delivering groceries and household essentials to people who have requested them via the Shipt app. Payments are made weekly, and you can work whenever you want.

To qualify, you must be at least 18 with a valid driver's license and insurance. You must also be able to lift at least 40 pounds and have a reliable (1997 or newer) vehicle along with a newer model Android or iPhone smartphone.

DoorDash

DoorDash is almost always looking for “Dashers” to deliver with them. If you're accepted to do this, you'll receive notifications of food orders on an app via your smartphone. These are orders placed by people who have signed up to have food delivered to them via DoorDash.

If you accept an order, you go get the food and take it to the person who ordered it. You're free to use a car, bike, scooter, or motorcycle to deliver these orders, and you can work whenever you feel like working.

DoorDash doesn't list how much you can earn on their website. But, according to Glassdoor, most drivers are averaging around $11/hourly. Note you also receive tips for your work.

You must be at least 18 or older to drive for DoorDash. They will ask for a driver's license and social security number when you apply. Note they will run a background check on you before accepting you to make deliveries.

Instacart

Instacart is a very similar company to Shipt (listed above). You sign up to work with them as a personal shopper, delivering fresh groceries to their customers who have signed up for the service.

If you work with Instacart as a full-service shopper, you'll need access to a car. But if you work with them as an in-store shopper, no car access is necessarily required.

You can work whenever you want as an Instacart shopper. While they do not list pay information on their website, Glassdoor indicates that most of their shoppers are averaging about $14 hourly.

Get Paid To Drive People Around

If making deliveries isn't how you'd like to get paid to drive your car, and you actually like interacting with people on a more personal level, you might enjoy being a driver for some of the ridesharing apps that are so popular these days. There are two companies in particular that I'm highlighting below, and these are almost always in need of new drivers.

Lyft

Lyft is a popular service that matches drivers with passengers who need rides. As a Lyft driver, you keep 100 percent of your tips. The rest of the pay amount is based on the time and distance of the ride.

Ride requests will come through the app, and you're free to accept the ones you want. You can drive with Lyft at anytime, so this is extremely flexible.

The exact qualifications to drive with Lyft will vary depending on your city, but their website has a full list of cities and requirements for each one you can look through prior to applying.

Uber

If you drive with Uber, you can also work whenever you want and earn money on your own time. Uber allows you to set your own hours and get paid how and when you want.

To qualify to drive for Uber, you have to meet the minimum age to drive in your city. You also must have at least a year of past driving experience. If you're driving your own car, you'll also need proof of insurance.

If you don't have a car, Uber apparently supplies them for you to drive for the purpose of earning money.

Get Paid To Display Ads On Your Car

If you'd rather not drive people around or make deliveries as ways to get paid to drive your car, you can still earn money with your car if you're willing to have it all wrapped up in ads. I'm sure you've seen cars on the road that look like moving billboards for various companies. If you did, the people driving are very likely earning extra money because they agreed to have their cars wrapped.

You do need to be careful with these kinds of opportunities because many of the companies offering to pay you to do this seem a little shady. But, I've done some digging, and the ones I've listed below seem to be legitimate. Still, do you own research prior to signing up.

Carvertise

This company claims to pay between $300 and $1200 per campaign. Basically, they'll wrap your car at the beginning of the campaign, pay you once a month via direct deposit during the campaign, and then they'll remove the ads once the campaign ends.

You do have to fill out a driver application with Carvertise, and you'll only be contacted for a campaign if a brand happens to like your driving habits.

Keep in mind that people who live in bigger cities are probably more likely to get asked to participate than people in smaller areas. After all, these brands will want as many eyes on their ad as possible.

And that completes our list of ways to get paid to drive your car! If you are aware of other ways to get paid to drive, please comment below and let us know. We'd also love to hear it if you have experience with the companies above you'd like to share with us.

Good luck if you apply for any of these!
